Setting | Newbird’s Arm
One of the largest domiciles in the Province Rosada, Newbird’s Arm sits in a pocket of the Newbird Mountain range, south of the domicile of Hutch’s Creek and north of the domicile of Grover’s Marsh.
It is well known for the Duchess Heartz’s lovely gardens, and the green forests that fill the mountains - one of the few true forests remaining in Rosada. Why? No one is certain. Some believe its due to the mist that lives in the mountains, the Effluvium if you will, while others think there might be magic lurking in the shadows. Whatever the reason, travelers from far and wide come to visit the town.
Under Duchess Heartz’s leadership, the town has abandoned many of the backward traditions still apparent in the Northwestern cities; the stamping of children was abolished approximately 17 years prior, vagrancy has become less criminal, and until the age of 19, anyone at risk is protected.
That doesn’t stop Elder Don Van of the Order from spreading the dialect, prejudice, and rumors about those tainted with the black stamp. With the Guard under his thumb, no one is really safe - despite the Duchess’s best efforts.
Here, our protagonist - Brent Harley - grows up, keeping his head down (except when a story strikes his fancy) and trying to stay out of Shanty Town like his father.
Maybe just a little bit of magic will change things though...

Let’s Talk Inspiration: The Newbird Region
Location in The Mist Keeper’s Apprentice
Inspiration for setting can come from many places: your home, your dreams, your favorite TV show or book. For me, the inspiration came from the Smoky Mountains about a year ago.
Occupying the eastern coast of The Province Rosada, reminiscent of the Appalachian region of the United States, the Newbird Region basks in this smoky mists. In the heart of the region rests Newbird’s Arm, a bustling town that glistens with its green pastures and countless gardens.
Around Newbird’s Arm, imagine a place where mountains stand tall, and a mist drizzles over the land. Something so awe-striking, that it almost seems otherworldly? That’s the Effluvium in The Mist Keeper’s Apprentice.
The Smoky Mountains capture the essence of the Effluvium in the story, and as I walked through them a year ago, I couldn’t help but be transported into my character’s footsteps. A wooded fantasy world, yes, but one basking in smoke. Where else could this story take place?
P.S. All the photos above are taken by yours truly.

Brenton “Brent” Rob Harley | Protagonist
The Mist Keeper’s Apprentice | WIP by @elaynab-writing
Artwork by @agent-darkbootie
Storyteller | Outcast | Apprentice
Born in Newbird’s Arm of the Province Rosada almost 19 years ago, Brent was marked with the black stamp as a young age. A vagrant; an outcast; he was set to live an unfulfilled life, destined to be locked away behind the walls of a shanty town. He came to accept it, doing his best to be kind, enthusing children with illegal stories and helping those he can, if they let him.
The Order proceeded to take away everything: his freedom to love replaced with a binding betrothal, his desire to work replaced with denial, and his choice to be replaced with uncertainty.
Then he saw the woman in black.
Launched into a world of magic and mist, Brent finally has a chance to be something more. A mist keeper.
But is it worth giving up his life to become one?
Random Facts About Brent:
He’s quite tall but often forgets his own height, curling in on himself when he talks to others.
He enjoys chewing on raw lemons. He dislikes pineapple.
Brent looks like a young version of his father; his hair is more curly, and his eyes a bit brighter, but side by side they are clearly father and son.
Although he doesn’t drink often, when he does get drunk he loses his sense of location and often let’s go; mostly it’s amusing, but sometimes his emotions and the stories in his head take a toll on him. Smoking does not have the same impact on him.
He has a nervous habit of scratching at his wrist where his black stamp resides.
Brent has a stutter but it doesn’t hold him back; it usually goes away when he’s confident or is telling a story. The stutter causes him to have to backtrack on sentences and repeat words, or use fillers such as “I mean” and “like well”.
He once found a muddy puppy, proceeded to bring it home and let it destroy his bedroom, before giving it to his best friend’s father.
He’s only been in love once - the feeling is mutual between the two of them as well. Despite being a mutual feeling, Brent always asks if he can kiss her, touch her, etc before acting - at least for a while.
He’s impulsive - while he tries to think things through when emotions get in the way (or curiosity for that matter), he does some stupid stuff such as drinking heavily, dropping someone on their head, or darting after a stranger in black.

Setting | The Province Rosada
Cities [Newbird’s Arm]
A nation in the west, The Province Rosada is the largest country on the Continent of Rosada, ruled under Aristocracy rule.
But, when a majority of the elite are also members of the Order, a corrupted religious group with disdain for magic, stories, and those deemed “different”, many find themselves suffering.
The nation is divided into 5 Primary regions: the Newbird Mountains, the Opal Desert, Ab Aeterno, and Knoll. Each of these regions has a distinct way of life but unite beneath the rule of the Capitol.
Below is a brief description of each region:
The Capitol
Industrial, extravagant, and ahead of the other regions. It is the largest city in the Northwestern hemisphere (outside of the Independent City of Mert). All railroads and paved roads lead to the Capitol.
Despite it being the heart of the country, it is not necessarily the center of control. Rebellion is more likely int he city, as well as spurts of magic popping up outside of the Order’s watchful eye.
The Capitol is home to the Library of Rosada, the Academy, as well as a few of the moving towers of Knoll.
The Newbird Mountains
With its capital, Newbird’s Arm, situated in a valley within the range, the Newbird Mountains is known for both being backward in its views and forward at the same time.
Newbird’s Arm, led by the Duchess Helga Heartz, has tried to abandon practices of stamping children, as well as giving more rights to those the Order determines are vagrants, but often fails. Hardheaded and self-righteous leaders of the Order have grown interested in Newbird’s Arm.
The Newbird Mountain Range contains one of the few naturally occurring forests still thriving in the province - and perhaps in the world. No one knows why.
Other towns in the region include Hutch’s Creek, Grover’s Marsh, and Ockstead.
Opal’s Desert
Known for its glistening opals in a canyon to the south, where the Capitol of Opal’s Canyon made its home, Opal’s Desert is a treasure. The legend goes that looters have made a home for their goods in the desert, and since they vanished many have taken up the task to find the lost treasures.
Despite the glistening canyon, Opal’s Desert is dead. Little life fills the yellow plains, with the water running dry.
Other towns in the region include Zery and Aloby.
Ab Aeterno
The city of Ab Aeterno is the holiest city where some say the Effluvium - the misty like entity that fills the world - first touched the ground. It overlooks the region with a commanding voice and its where the Order makes there base.
It is the smallest region, consisting only of Ab Aeterno, Laysan’s Beach, and Maedee’s Outlook.
The Sister of the Order planted and maintain the pine forests surrounding Ab Aeterno. Yet, a rumor exists that the forests die every five years.
Knoll
The largest and the militaristic region of the Province, Knoll reigns surpreme. Some say, in truth, Knoll’s Gully controls Rosada, using the Capitol as a puppet. From Knoll, the moving towers that travel along the rivers move, keeping a watchful eye over *most* of the province.
All men who wish to join the guard train in Knoll for at least a year. They send their cadets out to the different regions post-training, to keep the rest of the province in line with their views.
There’s a legend that no flower has bloomed in Knoll in 18 years.
Other towns include Heahstan’s Lake, Chelidae’s Mark, Siskin’s Corner, Fin, and Kilk.
